How to Green Your Workout Routine

Working out makes you look and feel great. No matter what exercise you do, it’s bound to have benefits that improve your wellbeing and significantly improve the quality of your life.

In fact, studies have found that exercise can improve your mood, strengthen your bones and muscles, boost your energy, reduce your risk of chronic pain and disease, aid with relaxation and sleep, and increase your brain function and memory

Our mission is to empower you to make more conscious decisions that help protect our planet and the people that live in it, all while looking and feeling your best.

Here’s how to green your workout routine.

Explore the outdoors

In addition to working out, simply getting outside can significantly improve your physical and mental health.

Researchers recently found that spending just two hours outdoors a week is all it takes to see significant stress relief, improved mental health, a decrease in blood pressure and the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and an increase in life expectancy.

Doctors have even started prescribing trips to local parks as a way to combat the problems associated with being isolated from the natural world.

Running outdoors

Choosing to walk, hike, or ride your bike will also save you time and money, cutting down on gym memberships and driving (which we know is harmful to our planet) to a fitness centre.

Choose eco-friendly equipment

While working out in the beautiful outdoors, it just makes sense to use environmentally friendly equipment made from natural materials.

Unfortunately, the majority of workout equipment, particularly yoga mats and rollers, are made from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). In addition to being bad for the environment, the World Health Organisation has stated that vinyl chloride is known to cause cancer. Further toxic chemicals are often added to make equipment more flexible, and traditional yoga mats continue to release toxic chemicals, including Volatile Oil Compounds (VOCs) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) during their lifetime.

Cork is a steady and comfortable material that is a plastic-free and non-toxic alternative to conventional workout equipment. Meg (which stands for Modern Exercise Goods) designed their 100% biodegradable cork products after learning that 99.9% of foam rollers end up in landfill, where they sit decomposing for 500 years

We love brands that share our values of sustainable, transparent, and fair practices! Browse our range of Meg products for sustainable workout accessories.

Hydrate with a sustainable water bottle

It’s so important to keep hydrated while working out, especially in the hot sun. Shockingly, a million plastic bottles are purchased around the world each minute, and the number is set to increase in the coming years. Plastic bottles end up in landfill and our waterways, taking 450 years to decompose. Green your workout routine by switching to a sustainably made reusable water bottle.

Plastic bottle waste

We love these reusable bottles from Australian company SoL. SoL bottles are made from hand blown glass meaning they’re lightweight, won’t absorb residual odours or germs, and won’t leach dangerous chemicals into your drink. Browse our range of SoL bottles.

Dress sustainably

Choosing sustainable activewear is another easy way you can green your workout routine. Traditional activewear is often made from synthetic fabrics, like nylon, polyester and spandex, that are non-biodegradable and take a long time to break down. The textile industry as a whole is also unsustainable as it produces more greenhouse gases than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Traditional activewear is harmful to our planet through its use of toxic dyes and other non-renewable resources. The synthetic fabrics used in activewear also continue to cause harm throughout their lifetime as they shed tiny, plastic micro-fibres every time you wash them. These micro-fibres end up in our waterways, polluting our beaches and harming aquatic animals.

Up to 1,900 individual fibres can be rinsed off of a single synthetic garment each wash.
